The operating system has to manage the resources of your computer(Drive space, memory and processing power) between all the programs that are running on it. There's a huge number of things that may be reducing your computer's performance.
Why your Computer is Running Slowly?
- Too many Startup programs
- Malware or Viruses
- Too many background programs
- Falling behind on windows or driver updates
- Old or Fragmented hard disk
- Running out of disk drive space
- Running out of Random Access Memory(RAM)
How to make your computer fast?
1. Limit the Programs at Startup
If your computer has slowed down and the time it takes to boot has gone up, because there are too many programs running on startup. On Windows 8, 8.1 and 10, there's now a startup manager in the Task Manager you can use to manage your startup programs. Right click the taskbar and select "Task Manager" or Press Ctrl+Shift+Escape to launch it. Click over the startup tab and disable startup applications you don't need.
2. Check for malware and viruses
Malware and viruses will slow down your computer if it has been infected. Make sure that you are using an up-to-date antivirus program, and run any sans to find viruses that may be eating up your computer's performance.
3. Free Up Disk Space
If your hard drive is almost completely full, your computer may run slower because the operating system doesn't have enough free space to work adequately. Even if you have multiple drives it's best to make sure that each individual drive has a buffer of 500MB to help the operating system manage the files on the drive better.
Here are some tips for doing disk cleanup and increasing the performance of your PC.
- Empty your recycle bin
- Remove unwanted programs
- Clean your downloads folder
- Find and delete temporary files
- Remove the cache and cookies on your web browser.
4. Too Many Backup Programs
Programs may be running in the background and using up a significant amount of processing power. Review how much processing power each program is using and close the ones that do not need to be running.
5. Increase Your RAM
If you only have 4GB or 8GB of RAM and do a lot of multitasking, upping your RAM to 12 GB or higher is a sensible upgrade. In the search bar, type System Information to see how much RAM you already have (Total Physical Memory).
6. Defragment Your Hard Disk Drive
Defragmenting your hard disk drive can decrease the time it takes for the system to find each piece of data it needs to run programs and apps. Those pieces of data are stored on the hard disk before they are moved to RAM so the program can access them. Defragmenting your disk will speed this process up.
To defrag your disk, click on the Start menu, select control panel, then System and Security. Under Administrative Tools, click on Defragment your Hard Drive. You can select the process to run on a regular schedule.
7. Install System Updates
Make sure that your computer has the latest windows updates, as well as having up-to-date drivers, is important for the best PC performance. New windows and driver updates provide performance improvements. You can manage your computer's updates from the settings menu.
8. Reinstall Windows
If all else fails reinstalling windows is the best option. Remember to backup all your important files before reinstalling windows, as this process will clear all data from your hard drive. You can also use windows own backup tool which you can find by searching backup in the start menu.
