Difference Between a Router and a Modem

Both modems and routers are required for connecting to the internet. Because they both feature blinking lights on the front and Ethernet ports on the back, many people confuse the two. Modems and routers, on the other hand, serve completely distinct purposes. This article explore the difference between a Modem and a Router.

 What is a Modem ?

A Modem (Modulator-Demodulator) is a device that receives a analog signal to digital information. Modem translates it into a digital signal that your devices can understand . This allows your device to send and receive data over the internet.

Most modems  only have three ports. one that connects to the internet, one that connects t the router, and other connects to a power source.

What is a Router ?

A router is a computer networking device that has two basic functions: One it creates and maintains a local area network, and second it manages data entering and exiting the network as well as data moving within it.

The main function of a router is to distribute your internet traffic to the correct device in your network. It does this by assigning IP address.  Most routers have several Ethernet ports that allow you to connect to your devices via Ethernet cable.
